Perfect Blue is such a relevant movie because Satoshi Kon managed to visually and artistically encompass the psychological toll idol culture and objectification dealt on idols: you as a part of the audience, feel uneasy, feel tired, feel outright mortified despite the fact that all you’re watching is the life of an idol.
That’s it.
Commenting on a form of entertainment through another—he hit on these problems to a degree in which the audience could /feel/ the psychological decay and torment an exhaustion these idols were undergoing and showcase them via media.
And he was criticized for it! But he hit on problems that are still very relevant today and it’s incredible how his work still breathes and influences people the way it does.
